AI Website Builders Are Getting Dangerous (In a Good Way)
A year or two ago, if someone told me they built their entire website using AI, I probably would’ve imagined some absolute disaster.
You know the type.
- Generic stock photos.
- Weird robotic text.
- Buttons leading nowhere.
- A homepage saying “Welcome To Our Innovative Solutions”.
The usual shite.
But recently I decided to properly test an AI website setup from scratch to see how far the tools have actually come.
And honestly? It wasn’t too bad. In fact, parts of it were genuinely impressive.
Now before all the web designers start throwing laptops at me – no, I don’t think AI website builders are replacing proper designers or developers anytime soon. We’re safe for now lads.
But if you’re a small business owner wondering whether an AI website can get you online quickly?
The answer is probably yes.
What Happened When I Tried Building an AI Website
I wanted to approach it like a regular business owner would. No coding. No fancy development setup. No spending weeks tweaking things.
Just:
“Right. Build me a website.”
The AI website platform asked a few basic questions:
What type of business?
What services do you offer?
What style do you like?
Do you want leads, bookings, or calls?
Within minutes, it had generated:
A homepage
Service sections
Contact forms
Placeholder images
SEO titles
Calls-to-action
Mobile responsive layouts
And to be fair, the layout looked clean.
Not amazing. Not groundbreaking. But it was fair to say it was definitely usable.
That’s the part that surprised me most. The floor for web design has massively improved because of AI. Years ago, cheap websites looked cheap. Now even basic AI website designs can look fairly polished out of the box.
The AI Tools I Actually Used
I didn’t code this thing from scratch or spend weeks designing mockups.
The main thing I wanted to test was how far AI website tools can genuinely take a normal business owner.
So I used a mix of:

That’s the bit AI still struggles with.
Where AI Website Builders Actually Shine
This is where AI genuinely helps.
1. Speed
This is the biggest advantage by far.
You can go from: “I should probably get a website someday…” to having something live online in a few hours. That’s mad when you think about it. For startups, tradespeople, side hustles, or local businesses just trying to get visible online, that speed matters.
Especially if your current “website strategy” is:
a Facebook page
a WhatsApp number
and hoping people remember your name
2. Getting Past Blank Page Syndrome
A lot of people never build websites because they don’t know where to start. AI helps remove that initial fear. Instead of staring at an empty screen, you instantly get:
structure
headings
sections
ideas
layouts
Even if you rewrite half of it later, it gives you momentum. And momentum is usually the hardest part.
3. Content Drafting
AI is actually fairly decent at creating starter website copy. Not perfect copy, but decent enough to build from.
You can ask it for:
service descriptions
FAQs
homepage intros
calls-to-action
SEO page ideas
blog topics
That alone can save hours.
But Here’s Where AI Websites Start Falling Apart
This is the bit people don’t talk about enough. AI can build a website. That doesn’t mean it can build a good business website. There’s a massive difference. Because once you get past the shiny layouts, the cracks start appearing.
The Content Starts Sounding Like Every Other AI Website
This is the biggest giveaway immediately.
Everything starts sounding:
overly polished
vague
repetitive
robotic
You’ll see lines like:
“We are committed to delivering exceptional customer experiences.”
Nobody talks like that – especially not local businesses. A plumber from Finglas doesn’t sound like a Silicon Valley SaaS company. That human side still matters massively online. Especially now that the internet is becoming flooded with AI-generated content. Ironically, real personality is becoming more valuable.
SEO Still Needs Human Input
This is the part most AI website ads conveniently skip over.
An AI website might look decent, but that doesn’t mean it’ll rank on Google.
Proper SEO still needs:
keyword targeting
internal linking
page structure
local SEO
metadata optimisation
image optimisation
speed improvements
conversion strategy
AI tools are improving at this stuff, but they still don’t fully understand:
search intent
local competition
buyer psychology
conversion-focused layouts
That’s where experience still matters. For example, if you’re building a local business website in Dublin, you’d still want proper location-focused pages and SEO structure. AI usually doesn’t build those strategies well on its own – the input still needs to come from someone who knows what they’re up to.
AI Website Builders Still Miss the Bigger Picture
This is the main thing I noticed after testing everything.
AI is very good at:
generating pages
creating layouts
speeding things up
But it struggles with:
strategy
positioning
branding
trust
emotional messaging
And those things are usually what make businesses money. Anyone can generate a homepage now. The real challenge is: “Why should someone choose you?” That part still needs human thinking.
So… Should You Use AI To Build Your Website?
Honestly? Yeah, probably. But with realistic expectations.
If you’re a small business owner trying to get online quickly, an AI website can absolutely help.It’s faster, cheaper, and far better than having no website at all. But I wouldn’t blindly trust AI to handle your full online presence without human input.
In my opinion, the best setup right now is probably:
AI for speed
humans for strategy
That’s where things get powerful.
Use AI to remove the boring repetitive work.
Then use real experience to shape:
branding
SEO
conversions
trust
messaging
customer journeys
Because that’s the stuff AI still struggles with.
Final Thoughts
I built a website using AI expecting a complete trainwreck.
Instead, I came away thinking:
“Right… this is actually going to change the industry.”
Not because AI websites are perfect, but because they massively lower the barrier to entry. The businesses that win over the next few years probably won’t be the ones refusing AI altogether. They’ll be the ones using it properly. And that’s the important distinction.
AI can build you a website.
But building a website that actually gets customers?
That still takes a bit more thought.
